IELTS Letter 1 to a friend who will stay at your home

Dear Sam,

I hope you are doing well. Thanks for agreeing to look after my house next month.

As I told you last week, my plans for the summer vacations next month are finalised. You know how excited I am to go to Bali! It was impossible without you agreeing to look after my house and my lovely puppies when I will be on vacation. Big thanks in advance.

I just want to let you know that my house has just been renovated. Since you haven’t been to my place for a couple of months, you should use the stairs next to the garage instead of using the main entrance door. The ground floor is not accessible for maintenance reasons.

I need to mention a couple of tasks you need to look after during my absence. Firstly, my dogs stay on the top floor, and I will be very grateful if you can feed them every day. Secondly, ensure to pump the water in the tank every morning as construction workers would need it early morning.

Thank you once again for your help.,

See you soon.
Rahul

Review of IELTS Letter 1 to a friend who will stay at your home

  • The letter almost addresses all the instructions in the IELTS Writing task 1.
  • The author identifies the informal tone of the letter and maintains it well throughout the letter.
  • Each body paragraph addresses each instruction separately, providing clarity in the letter. Also, enough linking words or phrases are used.
  • However, the second instruction asks the writer to describe the house. Unfortunately, the place of the writer is barely described here.
  • The words used in the letter are aptly utilised. However, the writer could have used more specific terms. For example,

The word ‘vacation’ is overused. Instead, simple words such as trip, holidays or break could have been used correctly.

The author writes, “I need to mention a couple of tasks you need to look after during my absence. ” Generally, we use the phrase ‘to look after’ to convey caring for something. Instead of this sentence, the author could write, “In our absence, I request you to undertake a couple of tasks.”

  • The grammatical structures used are acceptable, but the author could use more variety of sentences.

IELTS Letter 2 to a friend who will stay at your home

Dear Tom,

I hope you are well. Thanks for agreeing to stay at our house for a month.

After selling our company, my wife and I were looking forward to relaxing at our favourite holiday spot in Kerala next month. However, we were worried about the safety and the maintenance of our home. Now that you are planning to come down to Mumbai and look after our house, we can truly enjoy our time.

Our three-bedroom apartment has a big hall, a well-equipped kitchen and a grand balcony. We will be locking two bedrooms and keeping the guest room open for you so that you need not worry too much about the house maintenance.

While you are staying there, please pay the milkman in cash as he doesn’t accept digital payments. Additionally, if you need any groceries, you may always call stores downstairs. They usually deliver the orders straight to the flat.

I hope you enjoy your stay. If you need anything, call us. Thanks.

Warm Regards,

Sam

  • This letter seems much better than the first one. It precisely satisfies all the instructions. Each paragraph has a specific purpose, and it meets it well.
  • The author connects each idea and paragraph appropriately and uses linking words wherever applicable.
  • An acceptable range of words is used.

There is one more variation of the task. Let’s explore it.

You are about to go on a vacation. A friend from another town shall come and stay in your apartment.

Write a letter to this friend. In your letter

  • Explain where your friend can get the key to the apartment
  • Give your friend some instructions about using your apartment
  • Recommend someplace to go

Write at least 150 words.
You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear _________,

IELTS Letter to a friend who is looking after your house in your absence

Dear Sanjay

I hope this letter finds you in pink of your health. Thanks for agreeing to stay at my house for a month while I am on a trek in the Alps.

When you reach Pune next month, you will find the apartment key with my neighbour, Mr Mane, a war veteran. The old age may have hampered his movement, and so do call him in advance.

Once you enter the apartment, reconnect the LPG burner as I will have it disengaged for safety. The milkman delivers milk early in the morning, and the housemaid follows to cook the breakfast. I have updated both about your stay, and I am sure they shall follow your specific instructions. You may use the washing machine and other electronic equipment as you please.

In case you are bored, you may visit Old Pune, where you shall see the Maratha Empire’s past glory. Specifically, the Kelkar Museum and the Shaniwarwada are treats for history lovers.

In case needed do give me a call. Thanks in advance for looking after my house.

Love,

Sonali
