Dear ____,

7 bands IELTS Letter to a homestay family in England

Introduction

Dear Mr Thomson

I am Siddhi Sarnaik, your guest for the travel and stay program. I learnt about your details from Mr John, the relationships manager of this initiative.

Body Paragraph 1 to introduce self

I belong to Pune city, which is known as the educational and cultural hub of India. I have recently graduated with arts as my major. Since I have been enthusiastic about learning the English language and culture, this program will undoubtedly be excellent for me.

Comments

The author changes the subjects suddenly without logical linking or using linking words after the first sentence.

Body Paragraph 2 on questions to ask information

Since I will be visiting England next month, I was keen to understand the weather conditions then, so that I can buy appropriate clothes and shoes. Also, I would like to know the routine life in a typical household there. This will allow me to plan my day and carry sufficient cash along with me.

Body Paragraph 3 about your schedule

As far as my travel itinerary is concerned, my flight is scheduled to land there on the 3rd, which is a Saturday at 7:30 in the morning. I will book a cab and get to your place at 10 o’clock according to Google maps.

End Paragraph

Looking forward to meeting you, your family and your friends in England. Thank you for letting me stay in your home.

Yours sincerely

Siddhi Sarnaik

Comments

The author addresses all instructions in the task with a dedicated paragraph. Also, most of the ideas are in logical order except the ones pointed in the first body paragraph. Overall, the author maintains a formal tone throughout the letter.

6.5 bands IELTS Letter 2 to a homestay family in England

Introduction

Dear Reenie Davis,

I am Atul Khanna. I am writing to inform you that I will visit your country and stay with you under a cultural program.

Comments

Although the introduction clarifies the purpose of writing the letter and introduces the author, the tone of the sentence is rude. Comparatively, the introduction in the previous letter was much better.

Body Paragraph 1 to introduce self

Currently, I am a student in an engineering college in India. I wish to explore your country, the United States of America. And so, I enrolled for the Indo American cultural exchange program. I received your contact details from the coordination team.

Body Paragraph 2 on questions to ask information

I am so excited that I have almost packed my bags. But I wish to know about your family. How many members are you and what age? I am planning to buy some gifts for each one of you and so knowing you and your likes and dislikes will be an advantage for me. I like hiking. I hope you and your friends like it too. We may take a trip together to the nearby mountains.

Comments

Again although the author uses linking words, the first sentence has no logical connection with the second one in the second body paragraph. Also, the idea about hiking comes without any clue after writing about the gifts.

Body Paragraph 3 about your schedule

As far as my travelling is concerned, I will leave India on 3rd of the following month and reach there on 4th. I will take a taxi to get to your house.

End Paragraph

I am hoping for your response with the details I have asked for. I have enclosed my contact information and identification details, as well as the travel itinerary, for your reference. I thank you for allowing me to stay with you.

Yours sincerely

Atul Khanna

Comments

This letter is a perfect example of why students score less than 7 bands despite great writing abilities. The author has decent English to score more than 8 bands, yet due to lack of logical connections and attention to the tone, they will never score more than 6.5 bands for such an attempt.
