The graph below shows the average monthly temperatures and the average number of hours of sunshine per year in three major cities.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

IELTS Report 1 on temperature variations in three major cities (Bad report)

Introduction

The given chart provides us with information about the average monthly temperatures and the number of hours of sunshine. The given data is compared among three major cities.

Overview

Overall, during one year, Sydney had the highest average monthly temperatures than the other major cities. Individually, London had the least number of total hours of sunshine annually, whereas New York had the highest. 

Body Paragraph 1 on the table

Let’s discuss the total annual hours of sunshine for each city. Firstly, New York had 2,535 hours of yearly sunlight, whereas London had 1,180 hours receiving the least amount of sunlight per year. However, Sydney had around the same number of hours as New York but with a difference of 62 hours.

Now, as far as average monthly temperatures are concerned, Sydney had the highest average of about 26 degree Celsius at the start and the end of the year. On the other hand, New York had the lowest average, around 4 degrees Celsius at the beginning and end. During the middle of the year, in July, Sydney had the least average monthly temperatures. London was slightly higher during the first three months and the last month of the year than New York. In the remaining months, it had lower values compared to that of New York. 

Review of IELTS Report 1 on temperature variations in three major cities 

  • The introduction of the report is acceptable. Still, it repeats the words from the task. 
  • However, the overview paragraph has a significant issue. It fails to highlight the yearly trend of temperature variation in the main chart. It also fails to highlight anything from the table.
  • In the given diagram, the line graph has more information than that in the table. So, clearly, the chart is the primary source of information while the table is secondary. Still, the author explains the table before discussing the graph.
  • Body paragraph 1 does not point out which city gets the maximum and a minimum number of sunshine hours.
  • In body paragraph 2, the author discusses the temperatures at the beginning and the end of the year. Then, he or she mentions the middle of the year. In the process, the writer fails to highlight the transition in trend with linking words.
  • The temperature in London is not compared with that in Sydney. Also, the report doesn’t mention that the temperatures in London and New York follow a similar trend.

IELTS Report 2 on temperature variations in three major cities (Good report)

Introduction

The given line chart provides information about the temperatures averaged every month in three significant cities over a year. Also, the table notes the number of hours of sunshine received by the same towns annually. 

Overview

Overall, London and New York’s average monthly temperature displays a trend that is precisely opposite to that depicted in Sydney. At the same time, New York and Sydney get almost two times the number of hours of sunshine per year compared to London.

Body Paragraph 1 on the line graph

New York is coldest in January at an average of less than 5 degrees Celsius, followed by London at slightly below 10 degrees celsius. In contrast, Sydney is hottest this month at 25-degree celsius. From March, London and New York start getting hotter and reach about 30 and 23 degrees Celsius respectively in July while Sydney becomes colder and reaches the lowest at 15-degree celsius in the same month. After that, all three cities again reverse their respective trends to reach temperatures similar to that in January in December.

New York receives the highest hours of sunshine at 2,535 hour in a year, closely followed by Sydney at 2,473 hours per year. On the other hand, London gets sunshine for the least number of hours annually at 1,180 hours.

  • All paragraphs on this have a well-defined purpose. They follow all the instructions of the task without repeating the words.
  • Paragraphs are connected, and even the ideas among them are well combined. The Different features which must be compared are compared with appropriate linking words.
  • Words are used appropriately and precisely.
  • Lastly, the report has a variety of sentence structures.
